How to manage files using Plesk?
Suppose you have a website that is ready to go on your laptop/desktop and you want to use File Manager to upload it to the Plesk server on Linux:
- On your machine, you will need to take the folder with all the files from your website and add it to a compressed file in one of the usual formats (ZIP, RAR, TAR, TGZ or TAR. GZ).
- In Plesk, go to Files, click the httpdocs folder to open it, click Upload, choose the archive file, and then click Open.
- As soon as you’ve uploaded it, click the checkbox next to it, and then click Extract Files.
How to edit files
in
File Manager
File Manager allows you to edit the pages of your website by default. To do this, you can use:
an HTML editor or a “what you
- see is what you get” editor style, which is a good choice because it adds the HTML tags for you. If you’re not so sure with HTML, this can be a useful option.
- Code editor. When you open HTML files with it, you will be presented with text highlighting the HTML syntax. If you are comfortable adding HTML tags yourself, then the code editor is for you.
- Text editor. HTML files open as ordinary text with it.
Your Plesk administrator may have already enabled the Rich Editor extension, in which case you can use it to edit HTML files. Rich Editor works in a what you see is what you get way, just like the Code Editor, though it’s better specified with features like a spell checker, for example.
Here’s how to use File Manager to edit
a file:
- Hover over the file and the line that corresponds to it will show a highlight
- Open the context menu of the file by clicking on it.
- Click Edit in… Editor (this will vary depending on the editor chosen).

How to change
permissions with File Manager
There are some web pages and files that you don’t necessarily want to share with the world, and that’s where altering your permission settings can come in handy
.
To accomplish this, find the item for which you want to restrict Internet access like this:
- Hover over it and wait for the highlight to appear as in the example above.
- Click the file to open its context menu and do the same again under Change Permissions.
- Make your change and then press OK. For more information about viewing and modifying permissions, see Configuring file and directory access permissions.
The default approach in File Manager is to change permissions in a non-recursive manner, so consequently subfiles and directories are not affected by modified permissions on the top-level directories to which they belong. With Plesk for Linux, you can have File Manager modify permissions recursively, assuming your Plesk administrator has configured the Permissions Recursive extension and understands the octal notation of file permissions.
To enable recursive
editing of access permissions:
- Hover over the directory and wait for it to be highlighted
- Click to open its context menu and then set recursive permissions again
- Now you can edit them. “Folder permissions” is talking about the top-level directory and any of its associated subdirectories. “File permissions” applies to subfiles in this case.
- When you have completed the permission modifications, click OK.

Search for
files in File Manager
You have a little freedom with file searches. You can have File Manager search for a specific piece of text in the file name, content, or both. You can choose how you want it to search for files by clicking the icon next to the chosen search field and then clicking on the type you prefer.
